island is a unique ensemble of European-based Australian women. In 1999 Jane Gower founded the quartet in order to explore the unjustly neglected nineteenth century repertoire for bassoon, violin, viola and cello on the instruments of the era. As leading specialists island's members perform, also as soloists, throughout Europe, The USA and Australia, with the finest early music orchestras and ensembles. island has performed extensively throughout Spain, France, Belgium and the Netherlands and won many friends when it appeared in 2001 for four concerts in the Barossa.

Island has recorded three CD’s, all premiere recordings on historical instruments, which have been met with wide critical acclaim. With the exclusive sponsorship of Torbreck, island has just recorded its fourth CD of quintets by Anton Reicha in the beautiful Gruenberg Church near Moculta.
